Heathrow vs London City: planning executive arrivals
Two airports, two very different arrivals. Knowing how each one works on the ground is what turns a long day of travel into a calm handover from aircraft to car.
Heathrow: scale, distance and timing
Heathrow is a long way west of the City and Canary Wharf, and the road in is one of the busiest in the country. Depending on the time of day, the drive can take anything from under an hour to considerably longer. That is why we plan Heathrow arrivals around the traffic forecast for the landing time, not around the clock alone.
The terminal matters as much as the flight. Each Heathrow terminal has its own arrivals hall and its own route from the aircraft to the kerb, and passport control can be quick one day and slow the next. We watch the flight from departure, not just the final approach, and our chauffeur is in the arrivals hall with a nameboard when your traveller comes through.
London City: close, quick and compact
London City sits in the Royal Docks, a short drive from Canary Wharf and the City. It handles smaller aircraft on mostly short-haul routes, and the walk from the aircraft to the exit is short. For a day trip to Europe, that can mean the car is needed only minutes after landing.
The compact layout leaves little room for waiting vehicles close to the terminal, so timing has to be exact. We position the car nearby and bring it to the meeting point as the passenger clears arrivals, rather than leaving it idling at the kerb.
At Heathrow we plan for the distance. At City we plan for the speed.
Which is right for your executive?
Often the flight decides: long-haul travellers arrive at Heathrow, while European and domestic schedules may offer City. When there is a choice, it is worth comparing the full door-to-door time rather than the flight time. A slightly longer flight into City can still mean an earlier arrival at a Canary Wharf meeting.
Share the flight number and the terminal if you have it · Tell us where the traveller needs to be after landing, and by when · Mention luggage and anyone travelling with them · Let us know if a discreet meeting point is preferred
Whichever airport they use, the standard is the same: the flight tracked from take-off, a chauffeur waiting in arrivals, and a reservations team that adjusts the plan before your traveller notices anything has changed.
